State of Oregon to Log Popular Recreation Areas
The State of Oregon is proposing to salvage log popular recreation areas in the Santiam State Forest near Mill City, Elkhorn and Stayton. The total logging will cover about 3,600 acres, and will impact Evans Creek Falls outside Elkhorn, Monument Peak outside Gates, Rock Creek near Mill City and sites up Wagner Road near Silver Falls State Park.
As the Statesman Journal reported:
“The actual fire damage to wood quality is unknown,” according to the draft plan released Monday. “Fire killed timber starts to deteriorate quickly with warm weather and its marketability quickly falls over time. The amount of charred wood and resulting merchantability is uncertain.”
